Enter the Arena: Bhutan Esports Association Joins AESF as Member

05 MAY 26

The Asian Electronic Sports Federation (AESF) welcomes the Bhutan Esports Association on 28th April 2026 as its Full Member. We continue to highlight the work of its member associations across the region, including the Bhutan Esports Association (BESA), which is playing a key role in shaping a values-driven esports ecosystem in the Kingdom of Bhutan.

Building a National Esports Framework

Recognized by the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC), BESA serves as the sole governing body for esports in Bhutan. The association was established to unify, regulate, and professionalize the country’s competitive gaming scene, while providing a structured pathway for players to grow from grassroots participation to national representation. Under the leadership of President Ngawang Gyeltshen, BESA serves as the bridge between Bhutan’s passionate gaming community and the international esports arena.

A Vision Rooted in National Values

BESA’s long-term vision aligns closely with Bhutan’s philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH), focusing on building a sustainable esports ecosystem that balances competitive excellence with digital well-being. The association is committed to developing esports as a meaningful and responsible career pathway for young athletes.

Strategic Areas of Focus

BESA’s development framework is centered on several key pillars:

  • Grassroots Development: Creating structured pathways from local communities to national teams
  • Infrastructure & Facilities: Establishing the first National High-Performance Center to provide athletes with world-class training environments.
  • Scholastic Esports: Integration of esports into schools and colleges to encourage STEM learning and responsible gaming
  • Governance: Developing a comprehensive framework for referee training, caster certification, and fair play standards.

Competitive Landscape in Bhutan

The Bhutanese esports ecosystem features a diverse range of titles, including mobile favourites such as PUBG Mobile, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, and Free Fire, alongside PC and console titles like Tekken, Dota 2, and Valorant. Strategy-based games such as Chess also remain an important part of the competitive culture.

Growing, Youth-Driven Community

Esports in Bhutan continues to expand, driven primarily by young players aged 15 to 30. Female participation is also steadily increasing, supported by initiatives such as “ShePlays,” which promotes inclusivity and gender equity across all 20 Dzongkhags (districts) of Bhutan.

Expanding Competitive Pathways

Following the success of the Bhutan Esports National Championship 2026, BESA is preparing to launch new initiatives, including the Inter-Dzongkhag Regional League and the Bhutan Scholastic Series, targeting high schools and vocational institutes.

Esports with a Soul

What distinguishes BESA is its philosophy of “Esports with a Soul,” which prioritize character building, mental health, and community service alongside competitive performance. In Bhutan, esports success is defined not only by in-game achievement but also by sportsmanship and positive contribution to society.

In a statement, BESA shared that “We are thrilled to collaborate with the AESF to showcase the growth of the Bhutanese esports ecosystem to the wider Asian community.”
