Inside the Role of Esports' International Technical Official: Shaping Esports with Rules and Regulations and Fair Competition

16 AUG 23

In Esports, the International Technical Official (ITO) holds a pivotal role, overseeing his/her station in charge with colleague technical officials, while enforcing competition rules and regulations. Responsible for resolving any match-related issues, the ITO's decisions help to shape a fair competition by dealing with any incidents in breach of rules and regulations and following a defined decision-making process. Their role ensures uniformity, integrity, and fair play throughout the event, embodying the essence of competitive Esports management.

We had the opportunity to speak with Janni Jensen, the only female ITO, and Moon Jae Min, the ITO from the host country, during the Road to Asian Games Regionals 2022 FIFA Online 4 in Seoul, South Korea, to share their insights and experiences.

Diversity is a strength, and having a mix of perspectives and talents enhances the overall experience for everyone involved. I hope to encourage more individuals, regardless of their background, to consider pursuing opportunities in Esports. It’s about promoting equal access and showcasing that merit knows no gender.

How do you handle high-pressure situations and make critical decisions during intense matches or competitions?

Handling high-pressure situations and making critical decisions during intense matches or competitions is a skill that comes with experience and preparation. By staying focused and collaborating closely with fellow officials, I ensure that decisions are made promptly and fairly. The goal is to create an atmosphere where the focus remains on the game itself and where the rules are consistently applied, contributing to a level playing field for all participants.
